- Count total expected holes. A single fold produces 2 holes when unfolded; a double fold produces 4 holes. Immediately eliminate candidates with the wrong total hole count.
- Watch for symmetry. Reflections create mirror symmetry across fold lines, not simple translations. Don't confuse a shift with a flip.
